This is part 5 of my How To Start A YouTube Channel Series.
So you've optimized your channel description, now it?s time to add those all important custom links to your social media accounts and websites you own.
I?m going to outline 5 top tips for adding custom links (and tell you why they?re so important) but first I?ll take you through how to add these custom links.
Check out the short video below (or watch it on the official FAQ Tube channel) and then check below for more top tips.
5 tips for getting the best results with custom links on YouTube
Custom YouTube links give your channel a look of professionalism and authority and also let people know that you're human (or ?legit? if you're a business channel).
They also allow you to capture your audience data and turn them from a browser into a fan or follower.
Follow these 5 steps (and look out for 3 juicy bonus tips) to make sure you?re optimized and getting the most from your custom links:
1. Include a link to a website you own
What do you mean you don?t have a website that you own and operate?
You should do!
It means that you can collect the details of your audience and own them (they currently belong to YouTube).
It also means that you can take the conversation where you like, unrestricted and if it?s one of your objectives you can sell them stuff.
Make sure your site has a Favicon ? that?s the tiny logo that shows on the overlay and in the url bar of your browser. Again it shows a level of professionalism that most don't have and is much more eye-catching.
2. Include social media links
Even if your only desired outcome is to get people to watch more of your videos and you have no interest in speaking with your audience you should still be using some form of Social Media.
It?s getting harder and harder to appear in people?s subscription feeds and so any chance to get a link or video in front of people should be used.
If people want to see your videos make it as easy for them as possible.
3. Only link to properties that are actively updated
If you?ve taken steps 1 and/or 2 and have sites or accounts that you?re linking to, make sure that they?re active.
Taking people to a website or social account that hasn?t been updated in ages makes you look unprofessional or that you don?t care about your audience.
Just like keeping your channel updated consistently you need to persevere with your other accounts to make sure that a fan, follower or potential customer is never left unsatisfied or unhappy.
If you simply can?t keep up with a certain account remove the link rather than send your audience there.
4. Only link to properties that are relevant to your channel
If you own a website that sells used cars but you have a Beyonc? covers channel on YouTube, don?t connect the two.
This is not relevant to your audience and they may take offence to being taken somewhere that is irrelevant to them and may result in them not watching any more from your channel.
The other negative is that even if you do manage to generate significant traffic from your channel, how much of it will be interested in what you have to show, making it even less worthwhile.
Make sure any social accounts you link to are appropriate for your audience.
If you?re mixing business with personal on your social accounts that?s fine but make sure that anything personal you mention is appropriate (and specifically age appropriate) to your channel?s audience.
If you do play out to a younger audience it may be worth having a separate account for your personal life.
5. Make the Link Title stand out (max 30 characters)
What?s the point of having these links if they don?t get clicked right?
Give viewers a reason to click with a call to action or a promise of value in return for their visit to the link.
Add Links in order of importance.?
People read from right to left or top to bottom and that?s how they are overlaid in the order they are added. The first to be read are likely to be first clicked
Even though only a small percentage of your traffic will ever come through your Channel Page** (and even less will visit the About tab) it?s important that those who do visit get the most professional and satisfying experience possible.
By having these links overlaid you have the chance to take the conversation to a platform of your choice and ultimately to increase engagement with your audience.
This takes care of most of the viewer facing set up of your channel but make sure to check out part 6 of this series as we go about optimizing your channel?s Account Setting. This will be available next week.
