This is part 6 of my How To Start A YouTube Channel Series.
This is one of the last steps to optimize the look and feel of your YouTube Channel. It?s also one of the simplest steps to implement.
It?s also easy to overlook but implementing this simple technique can have massive reputational benefits for your channel.
Before I dive a bit deeper into these benefits and my recommendations for using Featured Channels here?s a quick video (or watch it on the official FAQ Tube channel) to show you how to actually add them to your channels.
5 tips to get the most from YouTube?s Featured Channels
Feature Your 'Competition'
The whole point of featuring other channels is so that viewers make a mental association between your channel and the featured channels.
Because of this you want to feature the most authoritative and popular channels in your niche ? channels you may even consider your ?competition.?
This may seem counter-intuitive but by featuring these channels their authority will rub off on you and you will be seen as part of that community.
Fill Up The Widget
There?s plenty of real estate here and you may as well use it (I've never actually reached a limit).
The more channels you feature the more likely the viewer will recognise another channel in your space and make that all-important association.
Also more likely this will lead to a cross-channel relationship (see point 4).
If you struggle to fill the widget it?s better to leave slots empty than to add irrelevant or low-authority YouTube Channels.
Order Channels By Authority??
These are more likely to get noticed and if viewers only see one of these in your widget you want it to be the channel with the most authority as that?s who you?d most want to be associated with.
To re-order your widget simply click the edit icon on the widget and grab and move the channel thumbnails by clicking on them in the top right-hand corner.
?If you really can't decide or if you don't want to hurt any feelings hit the Shuffle tick box and the order becomes randomized.
Tell Them You've Featured Them
One benefit of Featured Channels that we haven?t yet discussed is the potential relationships that could arise from featuring other channels in your space.
By featuring other Creators you are potentially sending them traffic and exposing them to new viewers. Even if you are just starting out I?m sure a Creator or channel manager would appreciate this gesture.
Reach out to them in video comments, discussion tabs or on social media and let them know you've featured them.
Worst-case scenario you get no response.
Best-case scenario this leads to an on-going relationship that can include cross-promotion, collaboration and they may even add your channel to their Featured Channels widget.
Re-name The Widget
Don't leave the widget names as the default ?Featured Channels.? This is dull as ditch-water and is much less likely to catch the eye of the viewer.
Rename it something a little catchier and something that shows both you and your channel have a bit more personality than your average creator.
This 5-minute process can work wonders for your channel even if it?s hard to see a direct effect on views or subscribers.
This kind of ?soft? optimization won't make your channel famous overnight but as part of an optimized channel page it will work to cement your reputation as professional and an authority in your chosen space.
It will also show you to be a genuine paid-up member of the YouTube community which comes with it?s own benefits including increased trust and likeability.
That pretty much wraps up our outward facing channel set-up but we are still left with the trickier setup of the Channel Settings. Make sure to check out part 7 of this series ? How to verify Your YouTube Account - which will be available next week.
